Beyond the Turn Around: Witnessing Florida’s Hidden Seasons (2027)

Forthcoming from the University Press of Florida, Beyond the Turn Around is a work of narrative nonfiction that offers a close look at what it means to experience the seasons in Florida. Blending personal narrative, ecology, cultural history, and literary criticism, the book argues that Florida's seasons have long been seen through a northern lens, which has obscured the subtle ecological changes that shape life across the state.

Rooted in my work as a wildlife surveyor on the Wakulla River, Beyond the Turn Around follows the migrations, blooms, tides, winds, and other natural cycles that define the year in Florida, exploring how learning to recognize these overlooked patterns can transform the way we understand—and care for—the landscapes we inhabit.
